STORE BRAND VS. PROFESSIONAL BRAND
COLOR SAFE SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS
As a Colorist working with Aveda for over 4 years I should tell you that to ONLY use PROFESSIONAL shampoo and conditioner. It’s the best for your hair. If you are going to spend good money on your hair color you should spend good money on your products as well, right? Yes and No. As your local Chicago 20 something trying to make a living I would tell you to make a smart and wallet safe decision.
If you have some money to spend…
-Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner (Retail $15 per bottle): My #1 choice of shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. Why? It contains wintergreen that helps soothe the cuticle preventing the color pigments for escaping to prevent fading.
The Aveda brand is very concentrated so buying 1 shampoo is equivalent to buying 2 shampoos. In order to properly use the product you need to work water into the product. LESS IS MORE!
I never thought of using store bought shampoo and conditioner, however, sometimes the budget is so tight that I can’t afford the professional brand. Starting as a new colorist at a salon can be a challenge for the first year or two so some months my budget can be very limited. That’s where I need to get creative…
If the budget is tight…
-L’OREAL VIVE PRO GLOSSY Shampoo and Conditioner (Retail $4.99 per bottle): If you need to buy a store bought brand L’Oreal is the best option. Why? L’oreal is a professional brand but has different levels of products. You can find it at the local drug store, Sallys Beauty Supply, and at Salons. It is a brand you can trust.
I have been using the L’Oreal Vive Pro Glossy line since July 2010 and I have noticed no difference between the professional lines and store bought L’Oreal Vive Pro. I have used (Kerastase, Pureology, Redken, Aveda, etc.). The best part about it CVS usually has a buy ONE GET ONE FREE almost every time I go to the store! Talk about being a recessionista.
